Child Labor, but good

10 AM, I got started, and a few minutes later, came out 2 of the boys: “Mum, I want to help you, can I paint?”
“Mom, can I sand wood?”
First, it freaked me out.
DIY is a one-man (or woman) thing, isn’t it?
Then I reasoned. And started delegating. I let go of personal productivity to spend more time showing and coordinating.
Of course, being kids, they rarely stayed on a given activity for more than 20 minutes, and ended up playing ball next to me for lengths of time. Still, having them help meant there were indeed simultaneous workshops, and that gave the impression of a busy garden factory. Plus Superman was coming and going, he too ticking things off our list, often with the youngest in tow: mowing the lawn, fixing a shower bar and shelves in the boy’s bathroom, cleaning the car…

It was a great day! Smooth family moments. Sunshine, and DIT,…Do It Together.

Before going to see a friend, our 9 year-old told me he loved it.
Whit Monday is off for us tomorrow, so we still have time to make progress…

Brainstorming a kitchen

Brainstorming a kitchen….After nearly 4 years in our house, we want to explore some improvements. Primary objectives: more storage space, and more light, with some constraints… I spent the afternoon with my pencil and eraser. I’m “houzzing” a few pictures for inspiration too.
And guess who we’ll be consulting? Our favorite Manue now CEO of “1411Intérieurs”!!

For instance, I wonder can we create a gallery directly with pictures from our phone, or do they have to be loaded on the blog before? I’m not a techy, so happy to hear about your experience with and tips for WordPress galleries.

Front door, front Dior! Before-After

When I type ‘front door’, the French autocorrect types ‘front Dior’…how very chic!

So here it is, thanks to the ideas, advice, and shared enthusiasm of Houzz users, we finally chose a color, sanded and prepared the door, and painted 3 layers of…. ‘petroleum blue’!
We changed our mind a few times, between teal and dark red, and light grey. In the end, the choice happened in-store, on an instinct… this Teal-meets-NottingHill-blue just felt right.

Now there is another debate on Houzz: painting the living room door… Would you be for or against?

I have recently downloaded the Houzz free app. I found it very nice for browsing but I was not doing anything else with it. Today I asked the Houzz community for my first advice…about our front door color options.
In a few hours, I received several replies, suggestions, pictures for inspiration, and even a few photo-montages with different colored doors!
I’m truly amazed at the power of such a community, the collective creativity bubbling there.

Vive les artisans consciencieux!

La terrasse avait été posée fin mai, juste avant une petite fiesta à la maison…
Une semaine ou deux plus tard…horreur-malheur: de nombreuses lames de mélèze étaient fendues, des espèces de copeaux se soulevaient. Les échardes dans les pieds, ou dans les genoux ou les mains pour le plus petit d’entre nous, étaient iminentes.
Diagnostic: le bois qui nous a été livré n’était pas assez sec.

Heureusement, il y a des artisans consciencieux. Le notre (cf bonnes addresses) a quasi-harcelé le fournisseur de bois jusqu’à ce qu’il veuille bien venir sur place. Ledit fournisseur a commencé à arguer que “c’est normal…d’ailleurs vous avez signé votre bon de commande et c’est écrit en bas:  vous acceptez que le bois c’est une matière vivante – vous aurez forcèment des fissures et des changements au bout d’un temps…” – En chair et en os, il nous faisait le coup de l’inventeur de terrasses jetables… Mais notre poseur a tenu bon sans s’ennverver. Moi j’était un peu moins zen quand je posais mes contre-arguments (notabéné: se mettre peut être à la méditation)

Finalement Yannick et Pascal (les artisans consciencieux donc) ont négocié qu’une trentaine de lames soient changées à sa charge. Et ils ont du refaire les découpes (parfois bien techniques) et la pose  quand ce nouveau bois a été livré. La classe.

Du coup, maintenant, on a une terrasse bi-colore! Il faudra quelques mois pour que le nouveau mélèze prenne la teinte grisée de celui posé en Mai. D’ici la, je vous demanderai des conseils pour les saturateurs sans doute!

La stratégie de la carotte

Dimanche matin. il a fallu trouver le courage de peindre ces lits, en plein soleil…
Je vais partager avec vous le secret de ma motivation du matin- ma stratégie pour me bouger les fesses.
J’ai commencé la première couche (bleu baltique palette Leroy Merlin… À ce propos ça serait bien qu’ils remettent cette palette magique dans l’application IPhone, elle a disparue!), bref j’ai commencé donc à 8 heures du matin (réveil matinal systématique assuré par nos 3 garçons…), et je viens de finir la première couche. Il est 11h30 et il fait 30 degrés, et accessoirement, je suis encore en pyjama.
Voilà ce que ça donne:

Et voilà mon secret, la source de mon courage vient de ces deux carottes:

Douche PLUS Cadbury Dairy Milk aux éclats d’Oreo = bougeage de fesses!
PS: dans 6 heures il faut que je m’attaque à la deuxième couche…
PPS: On parlera un autre jour du bougeage de fesses pour contrer les effets de cette tuerie chocolatée. Il faudra trouver une autre carotte…

Au boulot, au soleil!

On s’est attelé à la peinture des lits tiroirs. Aujourd’hui, la sous couche!
Astuce: mettre de la patafix sur les vis que vous ne souhaitez pas peindre. (J’ai vu ça sur un blog déco, impossible de me souvenir le quel)
Demain, une ou deux couches de peinture, en pleine canicule?…
